Liisi Rohumäe’s THE REEal unveils poster during an intimate cast and crew screening in Los Angeles, California. The stars Leila Almas Rose and Victoria Sheen were both in attendance, gushing over the poster made by graphic designer and illustrator Natalie Popper.
Lensed by Catalina Parra and edited by Elisa Cortez, the project boasts a lot of women in key roles. Mila Rolston pulled double duty as the production designer and head of costume department, Jennifer Hawkins composed the score.
“That’s what I want to see most of all, more and more projects directed and produced and lead by women and non-binary folks,” says Rohumäe in her director’s statement. Sadly not present at the event, Jaime Zevallos, currently filming in New York.
THE REEal is eyeing a world premiere at a prestigious film festival but details are kept under wraps for now.
‘THE REEal’ wraps production in Los Angeles

Written and directed by BAFTA and GALECA member Liisi Rohumäe—best known for the 2019 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival nominee Chasing Unicorns and the 2023 Hollywood Fringe Festival favourite We’ll Come Back to the Title. It’s Fine.—THE REEal is a meta dramedy: a film within a film.
An insider close to the production exclusively shared this synopsis with the LA Time:
"A feminist male director makes a profound film about womanhood."
The film was captured by an all-female camera crew led by cinematographer and producer Catalina Parra, whose films have won awards at numerous festivals, including the Santa Barbara Film Festival, the San Diego Film Festival, and the Texas Gulf Coast Film Festival.
Further details about the project are still scarce but we do know it stars Leila Almas Rose (from HBO Max’s Minx and the award-winning English/Arabic feature, Jacir), Victoria Sheen (known for the Hawaii International Film Festival Official Selection Like Maddah) and my personal favourite the Jaime Zevallos.
Zevallos got his first 'break' in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam and has received much acclaim for his Series Regular role as Father Delgado in Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. He also frequently stars in a recurring dream I have about being trapped in a well.
I look up, and there he is—smiling, reaching out his hand. Our hands touch, and then I wake up.
Hello! This is Dana Currtain, the LA Time theatre critic here with a little update.

Our offices are under construction and we’ve lost access to Wi-Fi. My boss, Peter, is horribly upset about it all—but much like when I saw the infamous play Kivi-me, which dealt with repressed desires and opened to a cacophony of boos, I have been fully enjoying the muscular construction workers with their hard hats mulling about.
Creating something new - that is what true art is all about.
More soon!
